Stamp Duty Reminder From now on, if a document is signed by BOTH the employer and the employee, it must be stamped within 30 days. - Even if you can't find the exact document name on the government's STAMPS website, you still have to stamp it.
- What should you do? Pick the category that is the closest match. Use your best judgment!
- What is safe? Only one-way letters (like a notice from the boss that doesn't need an employee's signature) are usually exempt.
Why This Matters Right Now - Deadline: December 31, 2025, is almost here. You need to clear any backlogs immediately.
- Looking to 2026: It’s going to get stricter. The government is moving to a "self-assessment" system. This means HR—not Finance—is now responsible for deciding what needs a stamp. If we get it wrong, the risk is on you.
💡 The Bottom Line Stamp duty isn't just a "money thing" anymore; it’s an HR thing. If you have signed contracts or letters sitting in a drawer that haven't been stamped, we need to review them today. ⚠️ What Happens If You Are Late? If you miss the 30-day deadline to stamp a document, the government will charge you a penalty. The longer you wait, the more it costs: - Up to 3 months late: A fine of RM 50 or 10% of the duty (whichever is higher).
- More than 3 months late: A fine of RM 100 or 20% of the duty (whichever is higher).
